Todo esto que parece tan lejano y utópico en España, se ha convertido en realidad en Estados Unidos, ya que Ben Carvalho ha conseguido ser la primera persona en lograr hacer un curso de wrestling profesional en la Universidad de Berkeley en California, y desde kgb-wrestling nos hemos puesto en contacto con el para que nos explique como es esto de hacer un curso de Wrestling en la Universidad. 1- ¿Como tuviste la idea de hacer un curso de wrestling en la Universidad?
- UC Berkeley tiene un programa único llamado DeCal, que significa Educación Democrática en California. Y si un estudiante tiene una idea interesante para un curso, y puede encontrar un profesor y un departamento dispuestos a aprobar que tu puedas dar el curso, entonces la Universidad aprueba la clase. Cuando escuche por primera vez hablar sobre el programa, ¡supe que tenía que hacer un curso sobre wrestling profesional¡
2- ¿Tuviste muchas dificultades para que te aprobaran el curso?
- Me costó un poco encontrar el profesor correcto y el departamento que viese valor en un curso como este, Wrestling no es algo tradicional en un programa académico y varios profesores no pensaron que se debía enseñar un curso como este (y que oportunidad de oro se perdieron). Acabé mostrando mi idea a diferentes profesores hasta que encontré el correcto que creyó que mi idea se merecía un curso por si mismo. La profesora de Film & Media Studios, Linda Williams, firmó mi propuesta y mi curriculum y lleva patrocinando mi curso por tres semestres. Durante los dos primeros semestres, Michael Monajemi llevó el curso conmigo y en este tercer semestre es Jose Mendez, que hizo el curso en el primer semestre, el que me está ayudando con las clase. Ahora estamos preparando las clases de la próxima primavera.
3- ¿Que piensan los otros profesores sobre la temática del curso?
- Hubieron muchos profesores que apoyaron mi propuesta, pero por una razón o por otra, no pudieron patrocinar el curso, algunos porque ya estaban patrocinando otros cursos o porque estaban en años sabáticos. En general creo que muchos profesores de Film & Media, Inglés, Cine & Sociologia y otros estaban entusiasmados con la idea de un curso de Wrestling. El wrestling no ha tenido el reconocimiento que se merece ni se ha hablado de él en las Universidades y sorpredentemente hay poco material académico escrito sobre él.
4- ¿Como profesor de Wrestling, que luchadores te gustaban de pequeño y cuales son los que mas te gustan ahora?
- De joven era un gran fan de Edge, Christian & Eddie Guerrero entre otros, ahora me divierto mucho viendo a Dolph Ziggler, Davey Richards, Joey Ryan, Ricochet & Cesaro.
5- ¿Que empresas de wrestling sigues actualmente?
- Intento seguir todo lo que puedo, pero principalmente WWE, TNA, Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Realmente estoy emocionado por ver lo que depara Lucha Underground que empieza a emitirse a finales de octubre.
6- ¿Dentro del curso que diferentes materias estudiais?
- Intentamos cubrir lo máximo posible del mundo del wrestling desde los personajes y los storylines hasta como el wrestling influye en la sociedad y al revés con la sociedad influye en el wrestling. Hacemos la introducción al mundo de los personajes heel & face y cuales son sus comportamientos habituales, asi como también entrar en las sutilezas y complejidades que pueden pasar por alto si no te fijas detenidamente. Definitivamente intentamos mirar el wrestling desde un punto de vista crítico.
7- ¿Puedes explicarnos como es una clase del curso?
- Cada clase tiene una duración de una hora y media y normalmente hablamos sobre el tema de la semana, miramos un combate importante que ejemplifique el tema de la semana y entonces analizamos el combate. Por ejemplo cuando hablamos de las promos, vimos diferentes promos famosas y después visionamos el combate de John Cena vs CM Punk en Money in the Bank 2011. Asi pudimos directamente vincular la ifame promo de CM Punk con el combate y como se llegó a él, analizando todos los componentes.
8- ¿Ha sido el curso bien recibido dentro del mundo del wrestling?
- Pienso que cuando el curso va siendo mas conocido, mejor reconocimiento está recibiendo. Estoy buscando y trabajando actualmente en nuevas oportunidades con diferentes empresas de dentro del mundo del wrestling.
9- ¿Son todos los estudiantes del curso fanáticos del wrestling?
- Mas o menos de la mitad de los alumnos son aficionados o fans casuales, pero la otra mitad generalmente no tienen ni idea. Es interesante porque mucho alumnos preguntan como de real es o como se escoge al ganador. Usualmente después de unas pocas semanas en el curso, los alumnos que no tenían ni idea de wrestling se convierten en los mas habladores de la clase. Creo que todo el mundo tiene algo que decir en el mundo del wrestling aunque no lo hayas visto en mucho tiempo.
10- ¿Cual ha sido el mejor momento hasta ahora en el curso de Wrestling?
- El mejor momento hasta ahora fue cuando fuimos a un evento de WWE y nos dejaron entrar al backstage. WWE nos proporcionó tickets para todos los alumnos para ir a un show en Oakland y tuvimos un sesión privada de preguntas y respuestas y un meet & greet privado con el luchador de WWE, Titus O´Neil. Fue una oportunidad estupenda ya que casi ninguno de los alumnos había asistido a un evento en vivo de WWE. Esperamos poder acudir a Wrestlemania 31 como clase, porque afortunadamente esta muy cerca en coche del campus. No puedo imaginarme un momento mejor para estar con mi clase.

1- How did you come up to the idea of doing a wrestling course in the university?
- UC Berkeley has a unique program called «DeCal», which stands for Democratic Education at Cal. If a student can come up with an interesting topic for a course, and can find a professor and department willing to sign off on them teaching it, the University will approve the class. When I first heard about this program, I knew I HAD to develop a course about professional wrestling!
2- Did you have many difficulties so they will approve you the course?
- It took me a while to find the right professor and department who saw value in offering a course like this. Wrestling is such a nontraditional topic in an academic setting, and some professors did not think it deserved to be taught at all (and what a golden opportunity they missed!). I ended up pitching my proposal to several professors and finally found the right one who thought the topic deserved a course of its own. Linda Williams, professor of Film & Media Studies at UC Berkeley signed off on my proposal and curriculum, and has now sponsored the course for 3 semesters. The first two semesters Michael Monajemi co-facilitated the course with me, and this semester Jose Mendez (who took the class during it’s inaugural semester) is co-facilitating it as well. I am already planning next spring’s class.
3- What do the other teachers think about the subject course?
- There were many professors who were supportive of my course, but for one reason or another could not sponsor it (either they were already sponsoring another course, or they were on sabbatical, etc.). Overall, I believe most professors of Film & Media, English, Theater, Sociology, and others would be very enthusiastic about a class on professional wrestling. The topic does not get the recognition or discussion it deserves at the university level, and there is surprisingly very little academic literature written about it.
4- As a wrestling teacher who was your favourite wrestler when you was a kid? and now?
- Growing up, I was a really big fan of Edge, Christian, and Eddie Guerrero among others. Today, I really enjoy watching Dolph Ziggler, Davey Richards, Joey Ryan, Ricochet, and Cesaro.
5- Which companies do you follow now?
- I try to follow as much as I can from WWE, TNA, PWG (Pro Wrestling Guerrilla), and ROH (Ring of Honor). I’m also really excited for the premier of Lucha Underground, which premiers at the end of October.
6- Also inside the course which different subjects do you study?
- We do our best to cover as many topics as possible, from characters and storylines, to how wrestling influences society and likewise how society influences it. We introduce the basic mechanics of wrestling as far as face and heel characters and the dynamics that come with it. We go into detail about the intricacies and subtleties that are easy to overlook without close inspection. Overall, we look at professional wrestling through critical analysis.
7- Can you explain how is a class of wrestling course?
- Each class meeting is an hour and a half. In a typical meeting, we discuss the theme of the week, watch a relevant match exemplifying the theme and then analyze the match. For example, when we learned about promos, we watched a variety of famous promos, and then viewed CM Punk vs. John Cena from WWE Money in the Bank 2011. This way, we could directly link CM Punk’s infamous promo to the match it led to and its implications.
8- Has the course been well received inside the wrestling world?
- I think that as the word is getting out, the course is receiving a lot of positive attention. I’m looking forward to and currently working on future opportunities with various organizations within the wrestling world.
9- Are all the students of the class a wrestling fans?
- About half of the students are familiar with it or casual fans, but half generally have no idea about it. It’s interesting because many students will ask how much of it is «real», or how a winner of a match is chosen. Usually within a few weeks, even the students who had no interest to begin with are some of the most talkative students about wrestling. I think everyone has something to say about professional wrestling, even if they haven’t been watching it for a long time.
10- Which has been the best moment so far in the wrestling´s course?
- The best moment for the course so far has been attending a WWE live event and getting to go backstage. WWE provided tickets for my entire class to go to a show in Oakland, CA and have a private question and answer session, along with a meet and greet with Titus O’Neil. That was a phenomenal opportunity because almost none of the students had ever been to a live show. We’re hoping we will be able to attend WrestleMania 31 as a class, because luckily, it is only a short drive from campus. I couldn’t think of a better moment to have with my class than that!
